Check out the brief video tribute to the 2012 State Contest

Check out the brief video tribute to the 2012 State Contest

This year’s contest was certainly one to remember. I’ve put together a brief video to help commemorate the hard work and excellent results achieved by all. Why not take a minute (actually 1 minute 33 seconds) to reflect. Again, on behalf of the judges, Heather Jacob and Travis Klotz, and myself, congratulations to everyone for a job well-done.

A Saturday to Remember

The Indiana Web Design Contest Site Launches!

Hello! My name is Barry J. Sullens, and I am the Technical Chair for the Indiana SkillsUSA Web Design Contest. The official launch of the blog site for the Indiana Web Design Contest is here! High school students from all over Indiana can follow this site to stay up-to-date with the Indiana SkillsUSA Web Design Contest. The state competition in Web Design is held annually in Indianapolis, Indiana. Each April, students who advance from their regional contests converge on the Walker Career Center in Indianapolis to compete head-to-head with the other regional winners. Judges critique each team’s work based on the following criteria:

  • Design and Layout
  • Programming and Code
  • The Design Process
  • Teamwork and Professionalism

Starting with the upcoming contest in April 2012, students and their advisors may visit this site to obtain updates regarding the specific requirements, rules, and other important information regarding the state competition. Very soon, I will begin blogging (and Tweeting @webcontest_IN) some notes to help students and their advisors prepare for the upcoming contest. Once April arrives, the judges and I will blog and Tweet significant information, pictures, and other exciting news as it occurs during the competition. After the dust settles, the winners have been announced, and everyone heads back to their respective corners of Indiana, I will use this blog site (and Twitter to some degree) to provide generalized feedback to all contestants as a means of helping everyone, students and advisors alike, improve their Web design skills.

As long as my judging team can keep a fire lit under me, I will do my best to post Web design tips and tricks as well as “best practices” advice throughout the year. This can be especially beneficial for the team that gets to advance from the state contest to Nationals.

I was fortunate enough to attend the national contest in Kansas City, MO this year. It was my first experience at the National SkillsUSA event. Like a broken record, I kept mumbling “WOW” to myself. Although I’ve been involved in the SkillsUSA Web Design competition at either the regional or state level for the past 6 years, I had never been able to attend the grand finale. I met with two extremely enthusiastic gentleman in KCMO last month, Bill Cullifer and Mark DuBois (@Mark_DuBois and #webdesigncontest) from the World Organization of Webmasters (WOW). Bill and Mark are on the technical committee, “men behind the curtain,” for the national Web design contest. They were gracious enough to show me how the competition works at the national level. We talked for several hours, and Mark even visited the Ivy Tech campus where I teach to discuss ways to improve both the national and state contests. I am so excited to be a part of a contest that promotes professionalism, leadership, and Web design best practices.

I look forward to using this site to promote and extend the Indiana Web Design Contest for 2012 and years to come. Stay tuned!
